Sonia Khanna graduated from the Kellogg School of Management in 2007. Prior to attending business school, she worked for a well-known Swiss investment bank in New York within its mortgage backed securities group. “My focus while in business school was real estate. While recruiting for potential job opportunities, I decided to take a look at open positions on the CapitalSource website and applied for a position in the Structured Finance Group. Soon after, I was contacted by an internal recruiter, and it’s been a great experience from the start.”
Sonia is now a Director in the Commercial Real Estate group and has a lot to say about the differences between this experience and her last. “When I was at my previous employer I was limited to working in front of a computer all day long. There was little opportunity for client interaction. At CapitalSource, I am given the responsibility to run with a deal with appropriate guidance. I have learned so much because of it.”
And the differences do not end there. Sonia points to the level of collegiality among her peers as one of the starkest and most positive differences. “I know every member of Structured Finance around the country. There is a lot of opportunity for collaboration. I feel like I can reach out to my counterparts anywhere and ask questions or get feedback on deals on which I am working. And it’s not just a professional place; I have truly developed friendships in addition to professional relationships.”
Sonia also enjoys the culture of giving at CapitalSource. “Since I joined the company, I have been involved with a number of volunteer opportunities on a departmental as well as a company-wide level.” Sonia feels that it is the diversity here at CapitalSource that has enhanced her experience and keeps her so attracted to the organization. “The diversity in backgrounds and experience complement one another.
